What is Transcoding?

  • “Transcoding” uses a CPU or GPU to convert media files into another playable format. Essentially transcoding occurs if the video and audio for the associated movie or show are not played in their originally intended format (i.e., if a movie is 1080p with 5.1 audio and your device does not support 5.1 audio, transcoding will occur). We allow transcoding on <=1080p media but restrict 4K content from being transcoded as this takes too many resources. We strongly recommend against transcoding wherever possible and always advise streaming content at Maximum quality when possible to limit resource strain on our servers.
